Vintage Potholder Quilt

Vintage Potholder Quilt

video

I found one! And now this type of quilt is back on my list to make one myself. Believe it or not, this quilt may actually be one I made years ago, which is why I "bought it back" for a birthday present to myself when I saw it.  I had started one when I was 11, finished it at age 14, in these colors. This quilt has been a "waking dream" for me for many years. It was in Minnesota, and I have recently found three other of my own vintage possessions in Minnesota. There was a calamity in our moving at one point, and most of my stuff was donated away by mistake. I believe I am finding them again. Cape Cod is a tourist area, and most people are here on vacation- and then go back to places like Minnesota. I am, as we say, Happy as a clam! The lacing of the squares together with STRING is what I had done!!!! I'm a little in shock, and so didn't mention in the video it might be my old quilt. I had seen some pink stitching on one corner, the hand stitching before it comes off the loom, when I saw it for sale, and flipped- I knew it was my stitching of pink thread. And, I remember using all different colors of thread when stitching the edges. As I said, I'm a little in shock. One of the other items I recently found is my good ole Knitting doll  !!!!!

I washed it in the bathtub- first in a hot water bath with Pine-Sol for a disinfectant, and then a cold-water bath with laundry detergent.  It held together! Some color bleed of the browns, probably from the hot water, but worth it to disinfect it. If mine, this quilt is 45 years old to the year it was finished, and 48 years old to the year it was started.

The quilt is 10 rows across and 13 rows down. Potholders tend to weave at 5 inches on a 6 inch loom, the quilt is 50 inches by 65 inches.

Potholder loops are available at Dick Blick- $6.00 per 16 oz.. I should have known-- (+$4.95 shipping)
